In 2009, Bristol Haematology & Oncology Centre (BHOC), Bristol's 40-year-old cancer hospital was transformed thanks to the success of our £1.6m CaRE (Chemotherapy & Radiotherapy Environment) Appeal.

As demand for its services grew, the hospital was in clear need of modernisation. Money raised by the Appeal helped to:

·      Transform the main reception, and services brought together to offer patients and visitors a sense of holistic care as they enter the building. 

·       Dedicated space for supportive services including nurse specialists, counselling services and specialist psychological treatments was also created in both reception and outpatient areas.

·       Expansion of the outpatients department, by refurbishing waiting areas, clinic spaces and creating new consulting rooms, to offer patients more privacy and dignity.

·       Development of an integrated arts programme including artworks, lighting and way-finding signs, that all combine to link patients, visitors and staff with local well-loved scenes such as Bristol Harbour, Clevedon Pier and Cheddar Gorge, to make the hospital more welcoming.

The CaRE Appeal created a more positive and appropriate environment where staff can provide a more centred, holistic level of care and increased privacy to meet patients’ needs. It has enabled us to work towards improving the experience of cancer treatment for both patients and their families.

Fundraisers ran, baked, sang, cycled across the three moors, jumped from the roof of the hospital and Bristol’s second tallest building. More than a thousand former BHOC patients helped the charity to reach our target. Thank you.
