The Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) and Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) form the specialist regional centre for children and adults suffering from cancer, leukaemia and other blood diseases.

Many cancer patients require lengthy treatment and hospital stays, so the hospital surroundings make a huge difference to their experience and general wellbeing. 

Thanks to the incredible support of our donors through the Golden Gift Appeal, the BHOC was transformed to include the creation of the first Adult Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit in the South West. This has given children and adults their own space, as previously all patients were treated at the children’s hospital.

The new BMT Unit is so light and airy, and the private rooms make a huge difference. Previously, there were lots of other patients in the same room having chemotherapy and other treatments, so knowing I had my own space provided a great comfort.

Your hospitals still need your support

Bristol and the region have a growing and ageing population, as well as an increasing number of cancer survivors who often present with haematological conditions, which means demand for these facilities will continue to grow.

It costs £1,128 per day for one cancer patient to be treated in the BHOC. We still need your help to make sure that cancer patients from across Bristol and South West receive the most innovative treatment options and are as comfortable as possible during their treatment.

Please give a gift to our hospitals so cancer patients can benefit from:

• Convertible chair-beds on our cancer ward to enable families to comfortably stay with loved ones during a very distressing time.
• Funding for four clinical research fellows for four years so the BHOC can expand its research and increase the number of clinical trials. Patients benefit from new ways of diagnosing and treating cancer, resulting in better outcomes overall.
• New electric recliner chairs for the chemotherapy day unit to ensure elderly and infirm patients are comfortable during their outpatient treatments.

New facilities for patients are important so that they are in keeping with our high standard of care. More research and clinical trials can take place, offering patients a greater variety of treatment options.
