What we fund

Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity (formerly Above & Beyond) is doing great things to improve the health and happiness of every patient in all 10 of our hospitals in Bristol city centre, South Bristol and Weston-super-Mare.

Together with our local NHS, we push the limits of what’s possible. We go above and beyond to transform the experiences patients have in our hospitals, wherever the need is greatest. We bring moments of joy, comfort and hope to those who need it most. And we are committed to helping our hospitals go that extra mile for you and everyone who means the world to you.

WE ENABLE HEALTHCARE FOR ALL

We know that not everyone has the same access to healthcare and that many people experience barriers to care. We want to change this and make sure EVERYONE has equal access to healthcare and has the best possible experience for their individual needs.

Over the past two years, we’ve funded almost £800,000 in projects that support equitable access. But there’s still so much more to done, particularly for young people moving from paediatric to adult care, our learning disability and autistic population, and those accessing mental health and maternity care.

we fund Healing environments

The hospital environment plays an important role in the way people recover, influences the healing process and improves patient wellbeing.

We transform our hospital spaces into calming, comfortable environments designed with patients and families in mind, helping reduce levels of anxiety and stress and shortening recovery periods. From sensory design and artwork to calming lighting and nature, the physical environment has a significant impact not only on patients, but families and staff too.

We also support the vibrant UHBW Arts programme, which gives holistic care to patients and staff in the healing form of art, music, dance, creative writing and drawing.

WE SUPPORT OLDER PEOPLE

Did you know that nearly two thirds of the patients in our hospitals are aged over 65 and 40% of people over 75 accessing hospital services are likely to have cognitive problems or dementia?

We fund projects that that not only transform their experience within our hospitals, but also help to support rehabilitation, reduce anxiety and distress and improve engagement with loved ones and NHS staff.

We provide programmes of support that keep people mobile and fitter for longer, spaces that support those living with dementia, and activities that promote engagement and wellbeing.

We innovate for change

The NHS is always evolving and we support our hospitals so they can continue to deliver world-class care.

We’ll fund the most innovative and emerging technologies and treatments that can change, or even save a patient’s life, that wouldn’t otherwise be available.

We’ve funded innovative research, pioneering new treatments and cutting-edge technology that goes above and beyond the standard NHS provision, including 4D scanners to treat babies in the womb, life-saving heart pumps for high-risk cardiac patients, and bespoke incubators to transport the youngest and most vulnerable patients.
