Our impact Your stories Barry’s budgie joy after winning our charity lottery JOY, COMPANIONSHIP AND CONNECTION Barry Pook, from Burnham-on-Sea, has found unexpected joy and companionship after winning the £1,000 jackpot in our charity lottery. Barry signed up to the draw while his mother was undergoing openheart surgery at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, wanting to give something back for the care she received. When he found out he’d won, Barry says he was “dumbfounded”. Part of his prize has since gone towards two lively new companions - a pair of budgies who have brought colour, comfort and company into his home. “I was astounded to be named as a winner,” Barry said. “When I first received the letter giving me the news, I didn’t quite believe it! I live on my own and the house was feeling a bit quiet, so I decided to buy some budgies – they’ve added so much life to the place. “Caspian is a lovely marine-green colour, and the yellow one – Mum named her Primrose. They’ve settled in beautifully and they’re very happy little birds.” Barry also used some of his winnings to replace his failing mobile phone, something he says has made a huge difference to staying connected with his mum as she continues her recovery. “It’s really important for me to stay in touch with Mum,” he said. “She can contact me, I can contact her, and it gives us both peace of mind, especially in an emergency.” Barry works in mental health and decided to support Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity after witnessing the exceptional care his mother received during her stay at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. “With everything Mum went through in hospital, I saw firsthand how amazing the staff and nurses were during such a worrying time. It made me want to give something back. “Playing the lottery felt like a small way I could help support the hospital, but I never expected to win!” During his regular visits, Barry relied heavily on the free hospital bus – a service funded by Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity. “The bus was invaluable to me,” he explained. “I was visiting Mum frequently and had no transport of my own. Being able to get off the train and be taken right to the hospital meant I didn’t have to worry about other buses, parking or anything like that. It was one less thing to worry about.” With his mum now recovering well, Barry is enjoying spending quality time with her again. “I’m loving being in Mum’s company and doing fun things together,” he said. “I’d like to say a very big thank you to everyone.” Sarah Pryer, Director of Fundraising & Marketing at Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity said: “We’re absolutely delighted for Barry on his fantastic win! Taking part in our charity lottery is a wonderful way for people to get involved and support their local hospitals. Every ticket helps bring moments of joy, comfort and hope to patients, families and staff when they need it most.” COULD YOU BE OUR NEXT LOTTERY WINNER?
