SUPPORT BRISTOL ROYAL INFIRMARY

The Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) is a teaching hospital with close links to Bristol University and provides general and acute medicine and surgery, critical care, trauma and orthopaedic care and emergency treatment. It is also the centre for cardiothoracic services for the South West and for cystic fibrosis care in the Severn area.

The BRI's Welcome Centre opened in December 2013, providing a range of new facilities for patients, visitors and staff at the hospital including cafes, shops, a pharmacy. It's also where you can find the Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity's fundraising hub (between WHSmith and M&S). We are open Monday to Friday, between 10am - 5pm (4:30pm on Fridays), and would love to meet you.

Did you know?

  • It costs £672 per day for a patient to be cared for in the BRI. It costs double that to care for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit - £1,344 per day
  • Each year the BRI treats around 180,000 patients
  • The original Bristol Royal Infirmary's Old Building dates from 1737
  • The Infirmary was founded with the pledges of 78 Bristol citizens, who each gave between two and six guineas, to be used 'to benefit the poor sick'
  • The Infirmary received its royal title from Queen Victoria in 1850
  • 146 helicopter flights and 26,096 ambulances arrived at the BRI in 2016.

GREAT THINGS we have funded

Our £6m Golden Gift Appeal supported the creation of the new ward block in the BRI. The focus of the improvements was on caring for older patients, including end of life care, and on younger patients with cystic fibrosis (CF).

We've also been able to fund great projects like these...

DEMENTIA GARDEN AND ACTIVITIES

Your support has transformed the Sanctuary Garden in the BRI to make it accessible for all patients. We've built wheelchair-accessible troughs, added a waterproof shed to house the tools, and purchased lots of compost, plants and seeds.

We’ve also funded dementia-friendly gardening and craft sessions for patients and their loved ones.
