SPACES THAT MEET THE NEEDS OF PATIENTS AND THEIR LOVED ONES

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters, we’ve transformed Wards D603 and D703 at Bristol
 Haematology and Oncology Centre
(BHOC) into more compassionate and healing spaces - ones that truly meet the needs of patients and their loved ones during some of the most challenging times. These wards care for some of our most unwell patients, including teenagers, for anything from a few days to a whole year.

Ward matron Beth has supported the project from start to finish and is thrilled with the transformation:

Cancer journeys can be long and difficult. I remember one patient spent a year on this ward and just wished for something to brighten their day. It’s so important that these spaces are light, warm and welcoming for all our patients, their families and our staff.

The new spaces

A key part of the refurbishment was a new relatives' room, offering families a sanctuary when they need it most. Whether they’re taking a moment to rest, gathering their thoughts or waiting for updates, this space is designed with empathy in every detail - from soft seating to peaceful lighting. For many, it’s a small but deeply needed break during long and emotional days.
The new relatives room

We’ve also created a dedicated staff room - a bright, open space where doctors and nurses can take a break away from the ward. Previously, staff had a small, cluttered room that was hardly ever used. Now, staff take time for themselves or chat with their colleagues in their rest room with comfortable seating, bright artwork and food and drink facilities.

Throughout the wards, new artwork now brings light, colour and a sense of hope to the wards. Carefully chosen pieces reflect nature, community and healing - transforming tired, blank walls into a calm, warm space.

your impact

These changes are more than just paint and furniture. They support patients facing the unthinkable, their families navigating the unknown and our NHS staff providing the very best oncology care.

None of this would have been possible without our supporters. Patients and their families felt lost and tired on the wards, but your support has transformed the spaces to give people hope and comfort when they need it most.

From all of us at Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity and the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre, thank you.
