Gary Eley has completed a gruelling month‑long rowing challenge to say thank you for the lifesaving care his father, Malcolm, received after surviving a sudden cardiac arrest.

Originally from Bristol and now living in London, Gary rowed an incredible 10km every day throughout February (a total of 300km) to raise funds in support of the incredible teams at the  Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) who cared for his dad.

GARY'S STORY

“My dad suffered a cardiac arrest last February – it came completely out of the blue. My mum had no CPR training, but she stepped in, called an ambulance, and the rapid response team arrived incredibly quickly. Their actions kept him alive,”

After being stabilised at the scene, Malcolm was taken to the BRI, where staff delivered round-the-clock care and support. Gary Eley rows 300km for Bristol Royal Infirmary

“The nurses, specialists and physios at the BRI were incredible. They explained everything and guided us through what was happening. We owe them so much.”

This life-changing experience inspired Gary to take on the challenge.

“I just wanted to do something to raise awareness and give back a little bit.”

“Fewer than one in 10 people survive a cardiac arrest – and only around 7.8% are still alive 30 days later. That’s why my challenge lasted 30 days. Finishing all 300km feels incredibly meaningful.”

Despite the physical and mental demands, Gary kept going with the help of music, podcasts, and support from family and friends.

“My mum and dad checked in every day asking how my back and legs were holding up. Knowing how proud they were really pushed me through.”

Malcolm has since had a defibrillator and pacemaker fitted and is back to holidays, the gym, and rebuilding his confidence. With the challenge complete, Gary has raised over £1,000 for Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity.

“Dad and I went to Paris for the Six Nations final – that was a pretty good way to celebrate!”

THANK YOU GARY

“Huge congratulations to Gary for completing such a remarkable challenge. His dedication, inspired by the care his dad received, is incredibly moving.  The money he raised will help us bring moments of joy, comfort and hope to patients, families and NHS staff when they need it most. We’re so pleased to hear Malcom has so many exciting plans and hope that they both enjoyed the Six Nations final.”

Said Sarah Pryer, Director of Fundraising & Marketing at Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity.
