THE MOST SPECIAL NIGHT LIGHTS OF ALL

During Baby Loss Awareness Week, Thursday 9th to Wednesday 15th October 2025, Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity and St Micheal’s Hospital are turning on very special night lights for all the babies longed for and deeply missed.

Each evening between 7pm and 11pm, we're sending a beacon of light and support into the night sky for those who have experienced devastating pregnancy and baby loss.

As your local NHS hospital charity we really can make a difference across your community together. From transforming maternity and gynaecology hospital spaces to funding new equipment and mental health support groups - we are here when you need it most.

We hope you will stand with us and support families in their toughest moments.

The Wave of Light digital screens in Bristol for BLAW 2024

JOIN THE WAVE OF LIGHT

On Wednesday 15th October at 7pm, the beams will change to a warm white colour which marks the start of the global Wave of Light in the UK. The lights will shine brightly into the sky for all those families who have experienced loss.

For the Wave of Light hour, candlelight will sweep across BrIstol, taking over the JCDecaux digital screens, to encourage a moment of reflection, calmness and support through the usual bustling streets.

This is the moment people place candles in their windows or share a candle on their social media to remember the little lives longed for and loved deeply.

BRINGING LOVE TO MORE SPACES AT ST MICHAEL'S HOSPITAL

Last year, our supporters helped raise funds for our  Snowdrop Appeal to transform eight bereavement spaces in St Michael’s Hospital and Weston General Hospital into places of love. We will continue to offer support to the Snowdrop Team and bereaved families and we're also working with  baby loss charity, Sands, to improve a small side room on the Lavender Suite to create a memory-making space for parents who have experienced pregnancy and baby loss.

Spreading the love as far as we can across maternity care is really important to us which is why we want to extend improvements in several other spaces to create that same feeling of love, care and compassion.

Some families and individuals on their fertility and maternity journeys will also experience surgery, different services and other wards across St Michael's Hospital and, with your support, here is what we want to do next:

TRANSFORMING Ward 76

We’re refurbishing Ward 76, a transitional care ward, to create a welcoming space for new mothers and their babies moving on from NICU or those who need some extra care. This will include a communal feeding space, recliner chairs for family members to sleep on, mood lighting for each bed and a full redecoration.

Some families can spend weeks or even months on this ward, so it’s vital we make the environment as comfortable and homely as possible.

WELCOMING
SPACES
AT GYNAECOLOGY

We’re creating a welcoming, safe and supportive environment for patients the moment they enter St Michael’s Hospital for their gynaecology appointments.

This will include creating a cosy corner for children with sensory toys, providing comfortable seating, and adding calming murals and lighting to help ease a worried mind during the wait.

BRINGING COMFORT
TO WARD 73

Families want to stay together from the moment their new baby arrives in the world. That’s why we’re funding eight reclining chairs for Ward 73, the postnatal ward, to enable the birthing partners of patients to be able to rest easily, enjoy early cuddles in comfort and remain close by their partner as much as possible.

CUTTING-EDGE OMNISCOPE

We’re purchasing an omniscope – a piece of equipment to improve the removal of polyps in patients with abnormal bleeding patterns. It will enable surgeons to see inside the uterus for diagnostic and surgical procedures including quick and effective removal of the polyps during surgery.

SUPPORT OUR ONGOING WORK

You can support even more full-hearted changes like these in St Michael’s Hospital, across maternity, gynaecology and surgery by making a donation or buying a house on our special donor wall at St Mike's.

You can also leave St Michael’s Hospital a gift in your will with Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity and we’ll make sure your legacy is felt by thousands of people and all the little lives of the future.
