28th August 2024

On 10th and 11th August, Matty Scarratt-Jones and his friends Ben, Austin, Oscar, Felix and Jonathan took part in a 24 hour go-kart race to raise money for the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI).

Matty was inspired to take on the challenge in memory of his grandad, Ron, who was cared for at the BRI rheumatology department before he passed away. In Matty's words: "He was my hero."

Matty and his grandad RonRon was a a London Black Cab driver, so Matty thought the go-kart fundraiser would really drive some donations. The race was a test of concentration and endurance, the same skills Ron would have used every day driving in London.

Matty in his custom helmet and BWHC tshirtMatty said: "I was amazed at the generosity of people, and not just friends and family, but strangers donating just because it’s an amazing cause. As a team we are truly blown away by the support. It’s amazing. We were so happy to be able to raise money for Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity and particularly the rheumatology dept who looked after my grandad so well.

"My grandad always called me his mate and that's what our relationship was like. I learnt so much from him, just by being with him, and I was so lucky to have that close relationship."
